The Japanese Plum Loquat Tree, a hidden gem of a fruit tree. The fruit is not only tasty, but reportedly has many health benefits as well. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree, and slow growing multi-branching, can be pruned into a standard with a single trunk or espaliered to a wall or fence. Harvest the golden fruit in spring, and when steamed or baked the loquat fruit develops a delicious undertone of flavor very similar to nectarines and peaches. It can grow to 16'-25' and 15' across. The showy, oval-shaped leaves are leathery and prickly about 5 inches long, giving the tree a tropical look. Being evergreen, and bloom time being late fall to winter, it provides winter interest to your landscape. The abundant white flowers are very small and fragrant, attracting bees and hummingbirds. It grows in full sun to part shade with very little extra care and have very few insect problems. Hardy in zones 8-11. Enjoys cooler winters and is hardy to 10 degrees. This is growing in a 3.5-inch, deep pot.
